Fatal drunk driving accident in Georgia

Drunk driving in the state of Georgia can carry serious penalties. One person is becoming familiar with these consequences, as recent reports indicate that a 27-year-old woman is charged with vehicular homicide, DUI-child endangerment and single counts of DUI speeding and reckless driving. Each charge of vehicular homicide carries a potential 15 year prison sentence.

These charges stem from a fatal car crash in September of this year. It is alleged that the suspect was driving 91 miles per hour on Buford Highway. The speed limit was 45 miles per hour. Her car reportedly collided with a car driven by a male victim, who was killed in the car accident. Another man was also killed during the fatal accident. The collision occurred a little after 2:00 a.m. on September 14.

Police officers on the scene determined that the suspect’s blood-alcohol level was 0.147. The legal limit is 0.08. In the car with the suspect was her husband and their two children. Her children suffered non-life threatening injuries and were treated at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The accident is still under investigation. However, recently the suspect was officially arrested and charged. She was released the same day on almost $40,000 bond.

It is important to note that although the suspect in this case has been charged, she has not been found guilty. As with all defendants, she has a right to a defense. Those facing drunk driving charges will want to review their options. Although the suspect in this case potentially faces heavy penalties, there may be alternative legal options that may be available to her and defendants like her.
