NFL team owner faces misdemeanor charges for impaired driving

Atlanta Falcons fans have probably heard by now that Jim Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts, faces two misdemeanor counts after a March arrest on intoxicated driving charges. He has officially been charged with operating a car while intoxicated and operating a car with a schedule I or II controlled substance in the body.

The incident in question occurred on March 16, 2014, just miles from Irsay’s home. During the 3:00 a.m. arrest, it was discovered that Irsay had almost $30,000 in cash and several bottles of prescription drugs in his vehicle. He denied being drunk and admitted to taking prescription drugs during the day. The police report reveals that Irsay failed a field sobriety test. Irsay’s license will be automatically suspended for one year due to his refusal of a blood test.

Isray has reportedly undergone years of orthopedic operations. This led to an admitted addiction to painkillers in 2002. Until this incident, it was believed that he had overcome his addiction. When the initial hearing was scheduled it was subsequently delayed due to Isray’s inpatient treatment at an out-of-state medical facility to help him manage his current challenge. A new hearing is scheduled for June 19, 2014.

Any type of impaired driving is a serious matter. Whether the arrestee is a high profile owner of a football team or not, the need for good legal defense is crucial. Even misdemeanor charges can have long-term repercussions for the accused. Getting the right information about legal options can ensure that all of the rights of the defendant are preserved.
