Domestic violence statistics in Georgia

Domestic violence is a serious issue in the state of Georgia. It has been estimated that one in every four women will experience domestic violence at some point in her life. Here in Georgia, it continues to be one of the leading causes of injuries for women and girls between the age of 15 and 44.

The month of April is child abuse awareness month. Though this post focuses on domestic violence, there are correlations between domestic violence and child abuse. More than half of the female victims who reported being abused by live-in partners also have children under 12 living with them. In addition, 75 percent of women who reported domestic violence also reported that their children have been physically and/or sexually abused.

Individuals who have been exposed to domestic violence tend to have long-term problems. It has been determined that the biggest indicator of future violent behavior is experiencing violence as a child. In addition to the risk of increased violence, victims of domestic violence are also more likely to suffer from depression, substance abuse and poor academic achievement.

To combat the effects of domestic violence the Governor's Office for Children and Family are working with advocates to combat this issue. Though much of the statistics given in this article related to women, it is important to note that the laws protect both men and women from domestic violence. If a victim of domestic violence needs help to get away from an abusive partner, he or she can contact Georgia's Family Violence Hotline at 1-800-33-HAVEN.
