Early morning shooting may lead to criminal charges

Visiting a restaurant or bar for a night out is a weekend staple for many. Fun, food and laughs are the order of the day. What is not on the menu is an assault or battery. Unfortunately, a Georgia woman was the victim of an attack during a night out.

The shooting occurred at an Old National Highway sports bar. The 22-year-old woman was shot in the face. It is unknown if an altercation preceded the shooting. The shot was fired at 4:30 am in the morning on the 7400 block of Old National Highway. Though the 22-year-old was conscious and alert, she was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. Both the motive for the shooting and the name of the woman has not been released while the police continue the investigation.

Though charges have not yet been filed, this shooting may qualify as an aggravated battery. Georgia statute defines aggravated battery as intentionally and maliciously inflicting a serious injury to the victim, such as loss of a limb, loss of use of a limb or serious disfigurement. Aggravated battery is classified as a felony. The penalty ranges anywhere from one to twenty years in prison. Minimum fines or restitution may also be ordered as a part of the penalty.

Defendants that face felony charges must take the charges seriously. Loss of freedom and financial penalties can have devastating effects on an individual's ability to find a job or a place to live. An experienced criminal defense team will ensure that a defendant's constitutional rights are protected.
