DeKalb officer in detention center after drug charge

Police officers have the duty to serve and protect. These men and women work to ensure that Georgia residents abide by the laws of the state. This past week an 11-year veteran of the DeKalb County Police Department has been arrested on a string of drug charges.

William Miguel is charged with conspiracy to traffic methamphetamine. Miguel was a part of the gang unit during his tenure with the police department. The Gwinnett County District Attorney, Danny Porter, believes that he used his position to give vital police information to the heads of local drug organizations. The extent of Miguel's involvement with various drug operations is believed to extend throughout the city.

Dekalb Police Chief Cedric Alexander has told local news outlets that an internal investigation continues on this matter. In addition, federal authorities are also looking into Miguel's actions. Though this is embarrassing and disappointing, Alexander wants to be sure to separate Miguel's actions from that of other officers in the police department. He believes that the actions of one officer should not leave a bad mark on an entire department. Miguel is currently being held in DeKalb County Detention Center and has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.

Suspension from work and drug charges are just some of the serious consequences that can arise from drug trafficking. Though not yet convicted, Miguel faces a tough road if he tries to rehabilitate his reputation in the future. Such serious charges require experienced legal help. A criminal law attorney can ensure that defendants facing drug charges receive a fair trial.
