Athens man arrested for theft

An Athens resident was recently arrested on both drug and gun charges. Willie Clausell was arrested after police found half a pill on his person. The pill was a controlled substance and Clausell did not have a prescription for the medication. In addition, he was carrying a pistol without a license. Both offenses led to a Wednesday night arrest.

The arrest occurred after a patrol officer noticed Clausell and two other men standing between two homes around 11:30 pm. When the officer approached the gentlemen, Clausell was observed throwing down a grocery bag and some other items. It was later determined that the bag contained a handgun and that he also had dropped 9mm bullets. The resident of the home told the officer that she did not know Clausell and that he did not have her permission to be on the property. He now faces charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, carrying a pistol without a license and loitering.

Each of the charges listed above can carry serious penalties by themselves. The combination of these charges could have far-reaching consequences for the defendant. As a result, any defendant facing these offenses should not take the charges lightly.

There is hope for defendants, particularly when the defendant faces property crime charges for the first time. An experienced criminal law attorney can help to negotiate alternative forms of punishment for theft and burglary. Instead of jail and a criminal record, it may be possible to do community service, serve probation or pay a fine.
